Why Spay & Neuter

spay-neuter

Whether you’ve recently adopted a pet or are thinking about it, spay-neuter must be a part of your pet adoption plan.

There are many important reasons to spay or neuter your pets, but perhaps the most important reason is that accidental litters contribute to the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation in our country.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, an estimated 6-8 million dogs and cats enter American shelters each year, and “barely half” of them area adopted. What happens to the rest? Tragically, they are killed – or “euthanized” – for lack of a home.

Spaying and neutering your pet is the only permanent, completely effective method of birth control, and the easiest way to keep unwanted animals from dying in shelters.

Additionally, spaying and neutering your pet has been proven to have a positive impact on your dog or cat’s health. Most notably, spay-neuter reduces your pet’s urge to roam looking for a mate, which can lead to accidents such as being struck by a car, becoming prey to coyotes or other predators, or being injured in a fight with another animal.

Other positive health benefits include the reduction of certain types of cancers, which can be prohibitively expensive to treat, and certainly take a toll on your pet’s quality of life.

Spaying and neutering also reduces nuisance behaviors such as urine marking, dominance-based behaviors such as mounting and excessive barking, heat-induced “yowling,” and escapism.

BREAKING NEWS: We're pleased to announce that two of the leading open door animal welfare organizations in Western PA will be combining our efforts to better serve the animals in our region. The Western PA Humane Society and Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center are excited to announce that we are merging into one cohesive organization beginning in January of 2017. We are excited to create one of the largest, dynamic, industry-leading animal welfare organizations in Pennsylvania. It’s a new beginning that builds upon the strengths and passions of both organizations for the well-being of animals in need. We realize that you, our valued and dedicated supporters, will have many questions in the coming months and we're eager to pass along more information as it becomes available. We're happy to report that no jobs will be lost as a result of this merger and that all three locations currently occupied by the Western PA Humane Society and Animal Rescue League will remain open. On behalf of the animals, we thank you for your continued support as this transition occurs and we look forward to your involvement in the next chapter of animal care and advocacy in the Steel City and beyond!
